Curriculum:
Mrs. White's 4th grade Welcome to 4th grade!!! I hope you are excited for the new school year I know that I am. We are going to be studying all about the history of Utah, and many other new and interesting things. We will focus on the IB traits and recognizing those students that demonstrate them. The best way to contact me is by email. I will get back to you as soon as I can. If you need to call me you can either leave a message or call before or after school. Obviously, I cannot take calls during the day when I am teaching.
Homework:
Homework will be given Monday-Thursday and will be mainly math, spelling, reading and writing. You will find the daily homework posted on my website. Students will be given 25 spelling words each week, and will do an assignment each night to prepare for the test on Friday. Spelling homework is as follows: Monday:write each word three times once in regular twice in cursive words 1-10. Tuesday: write each word and one that rhymes (can be a silly word) words 11-20 Wednesday: Use spelling words to make up a story or poem it can be silly.words 21-30 Thursday: Write spelling words in alphabetical order. Each week the students will write the words in their planners and I will try and post them on my website as well. Students will have a spelling notebook and will bring it home to do the work in. Each week this book is due back in class in Friday to be graded. Thursday is also the day we do a pre-test in class please make sure to ask your student about it and spend time reviewing the words. Test is on Friday or the last day of the week. Many weeks there is also a bonus word that you must go to my website to find so visit often. Students should be reading 100 minutes a week and recording their times on "Road to Success". Each student will receive a planner on the first day of school and will be expected to fill it out each day. Planners will be checked by me each morning as part of a grade that they are prepared for the day. Please look at the planner each night and initial that you have seen it. This is also another great way for us to communicate with each other. Occasionally students will have an IB project that will be a report, poster, model or research project. Look at the website for due dates I will also remind students and have them write in their planner. Students receive grades in Math, Language arts, Social studies, and Science. Spanish and Keyboarding are part of language arts. I use a standard grading system . Each assignment is given points and all points count towards the percentage. There are times that I can give the students time at the end of the day to work on homework. This is not always possible if it happens check my website and child's planner for notice about it.
Late Work: Late work will be accepted until the end of the quarter. However, the later the assignment is, the lower the grade will be. Homework turned in on time may receive full credit. If an assignment is late or has no name on it, students cannot receive an A grade will be deducted down to the next available grade. Each Friday my no name basket will be emptied I do ask students to check in on a daily basis. Please work hard to get the work turned in on time.If it is late please write LATE on the top of the assignment and put it in the homework basket. NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED ONE WEEK BEFORE THE TERM ENDS in order for me to get grades done on time.
NO NAME WORK: Students are expected to put their name, date, and subject in the right hand corner of all assignments. I do have a no name basket in my room. No name work will receive a grade deduction. We do have missing work parties that if a student has no missing work when I run the report they get to do a fun extra activity. These are held on random days so please encourage your student to have no missing work.
Attendance: Students are expected to be in school every day. so that they get the full learning experience. If a student is absent, there will be a absent sign on their desk. Students need to write absent on the top on their work. It is the students responsibility to gather the notes and anything they missed.
Tardies: A tardy will be given to students arriving after 8:20. If your child is late, he or she will need to stop at the front office to get a tardy slip. Multiple tardies will result in the loss of a dress down day and also contact from the school administration.
Grades: You will find your child's grade on our SIS grading system. There is a link for this on our school website. I will keep grades updated each week. If you have questions with a grade, please let me know before the end of the term or it will be too late. Students will receive a grade in Computers and Spanish. I don't have anything to do with those grades, so if you have any questions you will need to contact that particular teacher.
Classroom Management: Classroom rules will be posted on the front wall. The main rule in my classroom is RESPECT. I find that when students respect themselves, each other and property, everything else seems to fall into place. We will be working on IB traits and attitudes throughout the school year.
Rules: 1. Listen when others are talking 2. Follow directions 3. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself 4. Work quietly and do not disturb others 5. Show respect for school and personal property 6. Work and play in a safe manner. I also have a student pledge this year that we will recite at the start of each morning to get the students in a learning frame of mind for the day. You will be given a copy of this pledge on back to school night. In an effort to have students recognize the actions of their peers and teachers in their lives. I will have a what's called a tootling box where students can write down times they see a student or teacher exhibiting IB traits or attitudes. We will empty it and celebrate each Friday. I want to create a safe, peaceful, learning environment where all students excel and do their best. If students do not do their best then they will be missing out on many great classroom activities. I do like to reward my students for making good choices so we do brain breaks in my class. This is usually a movement or game of some sort. These must be earned and they can also be cut short. To earn a brain break they need to earn 10 stars then they get a brain break.
Parent Volunteer: I love parent volunteers. If you would like to volunteer let me know. I will have sign up sheets available during back to school night.
I would love a parent volunteer to teach our Second Step Program. The manual is very self-explanatory, and everything is ready to go. The lessons are about 30 minutes once a week. Any volunteer time you can provide is greatly appreciated.
I also need room parents and star reading tutors. If you are interested let me know.
Field trip volunteers that are first to contact me have priority. We will have two field trips this year.
I am looking forward to a great year in 4th grade. Any questions or concerns please let me know. Together we will encourage a responsible, respectful, and independent student
